How to Care for Your Tattoo: Aftercare That Actually Works

Your Brooklyn Tattoo Studio’s Trusted Healing Guide

Whether you just got a delicate fineline tattoo or a bold watercolor piece, proper tattoo aftercare is key to keeping it vibrant and crisp. At The Base NYC, our artists don’t just focus on beautiful designs—they make sure you walk away with the knowledge to heal them right.

Step 1: The First 24 Hours Matter Most

Your artist will wrap your tattoo to protect it. Leave the wrap on for a few hours unless otherwise instructed. Once you remove it, gently clean the area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.

Step 2: Let It Breathe (But Don’t Let It Dry Out)

Pat your tattoo dry—don’t rub. Then apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific aftercare ointment. We recommend gentle, fragrance-free products. Avoid thick layers—your skin still needs oxygen.

Step 3: No Scratching, No Picking

As your tattoo heals, it may flake or itch. That’s normal. Resist the urge to pick or scratch, especially with fine line or realism tattoos, where detail is everything.

Step 4: Stay Out of the Sun & Water

Skip the beach, hot tubs, and long soaks for at least 2 weeks. UV exposure and waterlogged skin can lead to fading, infections, and distorted lines.

Step 5: Keep It Moisturized

For the next few weeks, moisturize with a light, unscented lotion. Even after your tattoo looks healed, continue using SPF on it. Especially in NYC summers, sun protection is crucial to preserving color and contrast.

Pro Tip from Our Brooklyn Tattoo Artists:

Healing time depends on placement, style, and your skin type. Always check in with your artist at The Base NYC if you’re unsure. We’re here for the long haul—not just the session.

Because great tattoos deserve great aftercare.
